One of the highlights of Arts on the Square is the selection of award-winning artists by our special guest judge. Bringing a unique perspective and expertise in the arts, the guest judge carefully visits each artist booth, evaluates the creativity, craftsmanship, and presentation of the work, and selects recipients for several awards given. These awards recognize outstanding artistic achievement and celebrate the talented artists who help make Arts on the Square such a vibrant and inspiring event each year.

Meet our Guest Judge

Matt Lawniczak

Mathew Lawniczak is a Waupaca-based artist and art educator with a strong commitment to arts education and community engagement. He holds a degree in Art Education from the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh (2010), where he specialized in ceramics and sculpture. His artistic practice has also included work in photorealism and portraiture, showcasing his attention to detail and craftsmanship.

Since 2011, Mathew has taught art to students in Pre-K through 6th grade at the Waupaca Learning Center, helping young artists build creative confidence and foundational skills. He has served as Co-Chair of the Waupaca Fine Arts Festival Art Show since 2018 and has been a board member of the Waupaca Public Library Exhibit Room since 2015. These roles reflect his dedication to supporting and showcasing the visual arts in the Waupaca community.

With a background that bridges hands-on artistic practice, arts education, and community leadership, Mathew offers a balanced, thoughtful, and inclusive perspective to the jurying process—one that values both technical proficiency and creative vision. With more than a decade of experience as an educator, working artist, and arts advocate, Mathew brings depth and integrity to his role as a juror for the 19th Annual Arts on the Square.
